Contrary to their size, hamsters require a very large enclosure with a minimum space of 100cm x 50cm x 50cm regardless of species. Today, despite many Government petitions & well-informed hamster care groups, unsuitable hamster enclosures/cages are still being mis-sold to customers, particularly in a lot of pet shops today. Unfortunately, large pet chains are out to make money as opposed to providing what is best for the animal. When a hamster is placed in an unsuitable enclosure, pet owners will begin to see stressed behaviours. These include:

~ Bar biting

~ Climbing the sides of the enclosure or on top of items inside the cage looking for a way out

~ Excessive grooming/hair loss

~ Chattering of teeth

~Consistent chewing

~ Clawing/digging at sides/corners of cage

~Consistently wanting to come out

~Any excessive behaviours

Female hamsters are most likely to display these kinds of behaviours even with the minimum size requirements so it is important to provide all hamsters with plenty of enrichment especially for female hamsters & 'ghost' hamsters (those that you rarely see). Female hamsters do better in 120cm+ enclosures.
