Choosing a suitable enclosure for mice -
Despite their small size, mice need plenty of room to run, play, scurry & forage. The minimum for 3-4 female mice or one male mouse is a 40 gallon tank/620sq inch of floor space. The most suitable & popular enclosures are glass tanks with mesh lids which are also considered safer than wire enclosures. This allows for plenty of bedding (6-10inch) as mice love to burrow! When selecting an enclosure for your pet mice, it is essential to choose a habitat that is spacious and stimulating. To ensure your mice thrive, provide various hiding spots, with a minimum of five designated hideouts. Additionally, incorporate climbing accessories, tunnels, and cardboard boxes or toilet rolls to create an engaging environment. Natural elements like logs or branches can add enrichment, while a sturdy wheel with a diameter of at least 21 cm will fulfil their exercise needs. Mice also appreciate different textures, so be sure to use a suitable substrate like Chipsi Classic Chipsi Rettenmaier Big 29770 Litter 350 Litres : Amazon.co.uk: Pet Supplies or aspen bedding & orchard hay grass Oxbow Orchard Grass 425g - Tesco Groceries providing at least 6 inches for burrowing and nesting. A well-designed enclosure contributes to your pets' happiness and well-being. Ours also love coco fibre soil, beech chips & coconut husk for digging in which you can purchase from a reptile store.
My two current sets of mice live in two enclosures. Our first set of girls are in an Ikea Detolf. Although you cannot buy this from Ikea anymore, plenty of marketplace sites sell them. These can be turned on their sides with the shelves removed & measures in at 163cm x 43cm 37cm (height can be higher depending on lid obtained). Lids can also be found on the marketplace or like mine, purchased from places such as Happy Henry's Homes (I received no payment/sponsor for this - just my own recommendation). My upstairs girls group are in also in a glass tank 100cm x 50cm x 50cm.
Although I don't usually recommend large pet stores, they do offer some suitable items! Below are some recommended enclosures based on size only:

Mice love clutter! The more the better! Toilet rolls, hammocks, ropes, safe branches, deep bedding, wheels (see separate blog), bridges, hideouts, tunnels or any cardboard tubing providing it is wide enough. Mice are inquisitive creatures & always love new things! Simple ideas such as hiding treats in toilet rolls folded inwards at each end will promote enrichment & keep them occupied.
