In the wild, hamsters naturally create burrows deep underground to find food while protecting them from predators. Therefore, enclosures require bedding depth to be a minimum of 8-10 inches. Many large pet chains sell unsuitable bedding for small animals that can cause respiratory issues - DO NOT purchase sawdust, wood shavings i.e., pine or cedar shavings as these contain high levels of phenols which can be irritant to animals eyes/skin & can also cause respiratory issues.
