How-To Use The Degus Chew Toy

  • Choose the right spot: Pick a quiet, familiar area of the cage where your degus already like to sit, dig or snack. This helps them feel confident enough to investigate something new.

  • Introduce the scent: Let your degus sniff the apple wood & loofah chew toy through the bars or hold it near them in your hand so they can check it out at their own pace.

  • Place it securely in the cage: Tie the chew toy to your enclosure using the seagrass twine so it doesn’t roll/move away too easily while they gnaw.

  • Let them explore in their own time: Some degus will chew straight away, others may take a few hours or days. Avoid moving it around too often—consistency helps them accept it.

  • Rotate with other enrichment: Swap the toy in and out with other safe chews every few days to keep interest high while still allowing regular use for dental wear.

  • Check wear and condition: Inspect the toy regularly. Remove it if it becomes very small, sharp, or overly dirty, and replace with a fresh apple wood & loofah chew.

  • Monitor chewing and teeth: Keep an eye on how much they’re using it and watch for signs of overgrown teeth (difficulty eating, drooling, weight loss). The toy supports natural wear but doesn’t replace vet care if you're worried.
